The COVID-19 basic measures regulation, which expires on Oct. 23, is to be extended “essentially” unchanged for three months, the Health Ministry announced Wednesday.
This means that the FFP2 mask requirement will remain as before in hospitals, nursing homes, and medical practices. Still, Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) renewed the general mask recommendation for indoor areas.
Due to the decreasing number of new infections since last week and a declining viral load in wastewater monitoring, there is no need for additional measures for the time being, according to the health minister. “Of course, we will respond if the situation changes in the coming weeks,” Rauch stressed. He added that the Corona Commission will be dealing with a corresponding draft of the ordinance on measures later today, Wednesday, which will incorporate a ruling by the Constitutional Court on rules for religious communities.
Experts say the health care system is not expected to be overburdened at this time, and the recently discussed nationwide mask requirement on public transportation and in grocery stores is therefore not necessary based on current trends, according to the Health Ministry. “After the strong increases of the past weeks, we have monitored the development very closely and made a precise assessment of the epidemiological developments. For a few days now, the situation is easing, so for the time being, an extension of the existing rules makes sense,” Rauch said.
New corona infections are on the decline, with less hospital exposure
Rauch, however, renews his appeal to wear an FFP2 mask indoors, saying it remains our “most effective means of protecting ourselves and those around us. Therefore, reach for the mask indoors.” Furthermore, it is essential to take advantage of the testing offer in case of symptoms, and the Minister of Health is reminded of the Covid-19 drugs available. Completing primary immunization or a booster vaccination is essential “so every individual is well protected for the coming weeks.”
